SIGHTSEEING
As a major political, cultural, and economic center of Central Europe, Prague boasts a rich history and stunning architecture, ranging from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque styles. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, including Charles IV (r. 1346–1378) and Rudolf II (r. 1575–1611). The city played a significant role in the Habsburg monarchy and Austria-Hungary, as well as in key historical events such as the Bohemian and Protestant Reformations, the Thirty Years' War, and 20th-century history when it served as the capital of Czechoslovakia.
Prague is famous for its cultural landmarks, including Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square with its astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, Petřín Hill, and Vyšehrad. Since 1992, its historic center has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city is home to over ten major museums, as well as numerous theaters, galleries, cinemas, and historical exhibits. It has an extensive modern public transportation system and is a center for education, featuring Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe.
